Plastic Pipes: Business with Germany Upwards

From January to June 2020, Central American countries imported $169 million in plastic pipe and accessories, and purchases from German companies increased by 64%, when compared to the same period in 2019.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
In the first six months of 2020 the main buyer of plastic pipe and fittings in Central America was Costa Rica, with $86 million, followed by Guatemala and Honduras, with $20 million each, Panama, with $17 million, El Salvador, with $14 million and Nicaragua, with $12 million.

For the semester in question, Guatemalan companies were the only ones in the region that increased their imports year-on-year, registering an 8% variation.

In the case of Salvadoran companies, they reduced their purchases by 2%, Nicaraguan companies by 8%, Costa Rican companies by 13%, Honduran companies by 16% and Panamanian companies by 32%.

Regional Purchases Down
Between the first semester of 2019 and the same period of 2020 the value imported into Central America registered a decrease of 13%, from $193 million to $169 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of imports, purchases from companies in Germany increased from $3.6 million to $5.9 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to June of this year, 43% of the value imported from Central America came from the United States, 10% from Mexico, 4% from Germany, 3% from China, 3% from Colombia and 3% from Australia.

The USA is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the first half of the last few years, since in 2012 it represented 33% of regional purchases and in 2020 the proportion reached 43%.

During 2018, Central American countries imported $355 million in plastic pipe and fittings, and purchases from Mexican companies grew 10% and U.S. companies 2%, compared to 2017.
