Tilapia exports from the only two companies who sell abroad, mainly to the United States, reached $36 million in the first ten months of the year.

Aquacorporación Group International (GACI) currently produces about 18,000 metric tons at its plant in Cañas, in the province of Guanacaste. Now they are building a plant to produce food for the tilapia, with an investment of $15 million, allowing them to increase annual production to 20,000 metric tons.

An article in Elfinancierocr.com reports that the head of the Costa Rican Institute of Aquaculture Fisheries and Aquaculture (Incopesca), Alvaro Otárola explains that there are two systems for cultivating tilapia. The first is industrial, large scale, for export and centered in Cañas, an irrigation district. The other is made up of small farmers (about 900) with an annual production ranging from 500 kilos to 80 tonnes. Incopesca estimated that the cultivation of this species covered 680 hectares and a total production of 5,000 tonnes of fresh fillets in 2010. "
