Tilapia Consumption is Promoted in Honduras

The Secretary of Agriculture (SAG) will invest more than $20 million to promote the internal production and consumption of tilapia.

The head of SAG, Hector Hernandez expressed that the idea is to produce 1.5 million pounds of tilapia for the domestic market beginning next year.

La Tribuna publishes on its website: “Tilapia production will provide Honduras approximately $80 million in revenues, just through its exports to the U.S. market.”

Honduras Ready to Sell Tilapia to Europe

Tilapia exporters expect to top their current sales of $60 million a year once the agreement with the European Union becomes a reality.

Honduras is one of the world’s leading producers of fresh tilapia, followed by Ecuador.

Erick Baide, from company Aqua Finca Saint Peter Fish, told newspaper La Tribuna: “We have all the required sanitary and legal permits to sell in Europe.

Honduran authorities hope to earn $80 million from the export of tilapia fillet to the European market, specifically to Spain. Exports should begin in June.

The La Tribuna published on its website that "the first shipment will be send by air to a Spanish shrimp company. Previously tilapia exports were sent only to the American market for many years, despite the fact that Honduras has the best technology in Central America, exceeding Costa Rica and Ecuador."

Honduras to Export $75 million in Tilapia

The country, one of the world leaders in fresh tilapia production, foresees a 10% increase in its exports for 2009.

The secretary of agriculture and livestock farming, Hector Hernández, indicated that in fresh tilapia, Honduras is in first place, followed by Ecuador and Costa Rica.

Aquafeed will produce 100 thousand tons of feed for fish and shrimp for its partner Aquafinca other aquaculture businesses.

The new company, which has set itself up in the town of San Francisco de Yojoa, was created through a partnership between Aquafinca and Gisis S.A. of Ecuador.
