Sugar Cane Harvest in Costa Rica 15% Less

The 2010-11 harvest was 3.32 million tons of sugarcane, compared to 3.92 million tons last season, according to data reported in the XVIII National Sugar Producers Congress, organized by the Association of Sugar Technicians of Costa Rica (Atacori) .

According to the report presented at the event by the specialist Mark Chaves, chief of the Directorate of Sugarcane Research (tens), "The performance in sugar (cane and processed) was diminished, although by a small degree. The reduction is due to a better performance in the concentration of sucrose or relationship between kilos of sugar per ton of cane ... in the 2009-2010 harvest 99.5 kilos per tonne were collected, while in 2010-2011 it rose to 106.93 kilos per ton", reported Nacion.com.

The impact of the rain on 12k hectares is expected to cause a 2.5 million hundredweight drop in sugar production.

Armando Boesche, general manager of the Association of Guatemalan Sugar Producers (Asazgua), indicated that the 2010-11 sugar harvest is forecast to be 48.4 million hundredweight, 5% less than in 2009-10.

Costa Rican Sugar Production Increases

Sugar production for the 2009/10 harvest will sum 7.3 million sacks of 50 kilograms.

Data from Laica, the Industrial Sugar Cane Association, explains the increase as a result of favorable climate in the regions where sugar is grown.

Edgar Herrera, Laica director, told Nacion.com: "In Costa Rica, 12.000 farmers grow sugar cane in 53.000 hectares. This industry accounts for 25.000 direct jobs and 100.000 indirect ones".
