Study on FTA between Canada and CA-4 continues

Canada continues its commitment to conclude the FTA with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (the CA-4)

According to Canadian Embassy officials, both sides agreed to meet in the near future.

Ruben Morales, Guatemala's Vice Minister of Foreign Trade commented that consultation of the private sector will commence on Thursday the 13th. This will permit discussion of the basic text, as well as the markets and services access list.

Honduras-Canada FTA Negotiations End

February 2011

The round of negotiations ended without reaching an agreement on sensitive issues such as pork, clothing, textiles and sugar.

The head of the Honduran delegation, Melvin Redondo, told, "concluded the second meeting and almost finished with most issues, we are just in issues of sensitive nature."

Discrepancies in FTA with Canada

The region has unified its decision to exclude from the text possible economic sanctions to be applied for labor law violations.

Raúl Trejo Esquivel, Guatemala's Vice-minister for the Economy, indicated that Canada would like them included while the CA-4 (composed of Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras) proposal is to develop supporting policies to improve the application of the region's labor laws.

Restart of FTA Negotiations Between Canada and CA-4

April 2009

On April 27, the countries will have a coordination round where the guidelines and schedule for restarting the negotiations will be established.

The meeting seeks to restart talks for a Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the CA-4 countries (Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras).

Canada CA-4 FTA negotiations to resume on Monday

December 2008

Next Monday, negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement with Canada will be restarted.

In addition to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are also taking part.

The meetings will be held on December 15 and 16 and the Guatemalan delegation will be headed by Sonia Lainfiesta, negotiator from the Ministry of Economy; there will also be delegates from the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment.
