Slowdown in Costa Rican exports

Exports continued to have a positive trend in the first quarter of 2008, with a growth of 6%, however it has began to lose its drive.

The trade deficit has grown, the Ministry of Foreign Trade (Comex) reported.
While in the first semester of 2007 foreign sales grew by 16%, they only grew by 6% for the same period this year.

Costa Rica Exporting Less In 2013 Than in 2012

During the first seven months of 2013, Costa Rican exports fell by 1.1% compared with the same period in 2012.

From a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Trade:

During the past 12 months ending in July, exports of goods maintained a growth rate of 1.7% compared to the 12 months prior to them, even though total January exports to July 2013 fell by 1.1% compared with the same period in 2012, reaching $6.693 billion.

Slowdown in Guatemala's Exports

The cause is a contraction in consumption in major markets for Guatemalan exports, mainly sugar, coffee and rubber.

This is mainly due to international market stagnation and decline in prices of commodities such as sugar and coffee. "Among these markets is the U.S., the country's main trading partner.

Fall in Exports in Five Sectors in Costa Rica

Medicines, textiles, melons, palm, foliage and leaves, have experienced significant declines in the value of exports in recent years. 

Nacion.com reports that "when comparing income in 2009 (when the global crisis hit and sales were strongly affected) with last year, for foliage, leaves and other goods the fall is 29.7% ".

Trade between Guatemala and China is reduced

Guatemalan purchases in China fell -24.9%, meanwhile sales decreased -54.9%, when comparing August 2007 to that of 2008.

The international financial crisis has already begun to affect the country's economy. Data from the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) show that imports as well as exports have fallen in the first 8 months of this year.
