Shanghai – Panama Transit Accelerated

Evergreen Line shipping company has announced a new transit time of 25 days for their Far East - Panama Service from Shanghai to Colón.

The company shortened the transit time between the Taiwan hub at Kaohsiung to Mexico from 23 to only 16 days, resulting in a transit time of 25 days for the route from Shanghai to the Caribbean hub in Puerto Colón, Panama.

The press release by the shipping company stated: "Evergreen is pleased that, even in today's challenging and competitive market in Latin America and the Caribbean, we are able to find ways of developing our services and focus on our customers’ needs"

More Traffic Projected in Panama Canal

For the fiscal year ending September 2018, the authorities foresee that the cargo that will transit through the Canal will reach 431 million tons, 7% more than in the previous period.

According to the Panama Canal Authority, the main reasons for the predicted growth in cargo passing through its facilities are the improvement registered in international prices of raw materials and the increase in demand from emerging economies.

Panama: Movement in Ports Up 10% in 2017

In 2017, Panamanian ports handled 6.9 million containers, 10% more than in 2016.

According to figures from the Panama Maritime Authority, the largest growth in container movement was registered at the Cristobal port terminal, increasing from 793 thousand TEUs in 2016 to 1.3 million TEUs in 2017, which is equivalent to an increase of 65%. 

Panama: Container Movement Up 12%

January 2018

Between January and November 2017, Panamanian ports handled 6.3 million containers, 12% more than the same period in 2016.

According to figures from the Panama Maritime Authority, the highest growth in container movement was registered at the Cristóbal port terminal, increasing from 698 thousand TEUs from January to November 2016 to 1.2 million TEUs in the same period of time in 2017, which is equivalent to a 75% increase.

New environmental rules for Panamanian ships

The ratification of the 2001 Bunker Convention by Panama will increase insurance costs for ships.

The "International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage," means that the owner of the ship is responsible for pollution damages caused by bunker fuel in the ship and for covering the cost of preventative measures.
