Salvadoran coffee closes harvest with record earnings

El Salvador ended the 2007-2008 coffee harvest with exports of 1.9 million quintals worth $253.3 million

These are the best figures that the country has had in the last six seasons, Ricardo Espitia, executive director of the Salvadoran Coffee Council, reported yesterday.
The sales figure for the 2007-2008 coffee harvest, which ended on September 30, is the biggest reported since the 2002-2003 harvest, when exports were 1.7 million quintals (46 kg each) or $105.5 million in earnings.

El Salvador is getting ready to close the 2007-2008 coffee season with the best figure of the last quinquennium in terms of export volume and income earnings.

Ricardo Espitia, Executive Director of the Salvadoran Coffee Council (CSC), indicated that at the close of the current season (2007-2008) on September 30, there will be a very positive increase in all indicators, that is, "after a cycle of low production and, by extension, exports." He also believes that the increase shows that coffee continues to be a drink "that has not gone out of style and that is liked more and more."

The Salvadoran Coffee Council (CSC) reported that, based on preliminary figures, exports for the month of August were at 141,557 quintals, or 5% less than the 149,078 quintals recorded for the same month in 2007.

El Salvador's coffee producers hope to open new markets in Europe for high-quality coffee under the trade association now under negotiation between Brussels and Central America.

"The association agreement is a major market opportunity for our coffee. Germany is already a customer but we want to expand sales to other European nations too," said Ricardo Espitia, executive director of the Salvadoran Coffee Council.
