Salvadoran Congress ratifies FTA with Colombia

The Congress of El Salvador ratified the FTA that the country, along with Guatemala and Honduras, negotiated and signed with Colombia in 2007 and which should come into force before the end of the year.

The ratification of the FTA "will strengthen trade, and at the same time will allow a greater flow of investment between El Salvador and Colombia," the Salvadoran Minister of Economy, Richard Esmahan, believes.

FTA Colombia – Honduras Now In Force

The Free Trade Agreement between both countries has been in effect since last Saturday.

With Honduras, Colombia concludes an FTA with the ‘northern triangle’ (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras). In November 2009, a Free Trade Agreement with Guatemala came into effect, and in Febraury the same happened with El Salvador.

Ruben Morales, Guatemalan Economy Minister, confirmed the Free Trade Agreement will come into effect on November 13th.

Next week, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will visit Guatemala. During his visit, the presidents will exchange contracts for the coming into effect of the commercial treaty.

Guatemala Delays Ratification of FTA with Colombia

An error in the final ratification text of the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia requires it to return to Congress for amendment.

Legislator Mariano Rayo, chairman of the Congressional Committee on Economy and Foreign Trade, told Prensalibre.com: "I, as chairman of the committee, accept there was an error and that we did not explicitly approve an exchange of notes in annex number three, which refers to the agricultural sector."

The Guatemalan Congress ratified the FTA that the country, along with El Salvador and Honduras, negotiated and signed with Colombia in August 2007.

Jessica Osorio wrote in Prensalibre.com: "The objective is to promote the expansion of trade in goods and services in a free trade zone. Each country will be sure to adopt the necessary measures to comply with the content that was approved."
