The pilot plan that the Guatemalan authorities implemented in 2014 and 2015 consisted of testing 20 vehicles for six months, which consisted of mixing from 1% to 10% ethanol in the different gasoline that are used in the country.

Currently the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the Association of Renewable Fuels of Guatemala (ACR), the Inter-American Development Bank and the University of Valle de Guatemala (UVG), will resume the plan for a 10-week period, which begins in August and ends in October.

Mario Pérez, vice-minister of the MEM, explained that "... the plan is being launched with several goals since environmental, economic and health benefits have been detected. Sugar cane ethanol will be used, which is already produced by the country's agro-industry so it can be taken advantage of, besides that in the current situation it can help reactivate that sector."
