Restart of FTA Negotiations Between Canada and CA-4

On April 27, the countries will have a coordination round where the guidelines and schedule for restarting the negotiations will be established.

The meeting seeks to restart talks for a Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the CA-4 countries (Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras).

Guillermo Castillo, technical coordinator of the Business Committee for International Negotiations (CENCIT) told that "there are only a few products that still need to be negotiated with the Canadians, but they are the most sensitive such as sugar, meat and coffee."

Talks between Canada and the block have been stalled since 2004.

Guatemala is coordinating schedules in order to resume free trade negotiations between Canada and the CA-4 countries.

Raúl Trejo, vice-minister for Guatemalan trade, indicated that coordination meetings have already been held in El Salvador to agree a schedule for the twelfth round of negotiations.

The round of talks will be held on February 23 - 27 2009, the Salvadoran Minister of Economy said on Monday

According to Minister Ricardo Esmahan, the four Central American countries will hold coordination talks to unify positions before going to the negotiating table. The dates and places are yet to be established.

Next Monday, negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement with Canada will be restarted.

In addition to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are also taking part.

The meetings will be held on December 15 and 16 and the Guatemalan delegation will be headed by Sonia Lainfiesta, negotiator from the Ministry of Economy; there will also be delegates from the Ministries of Agriculture and the Environment.

Canada continues its commitment to conclude the FTA with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (the CA-4)

According to Canadian Embassy officials, both sides agreed to meet in the near future.

Ruben Morales, Guatemala's Vice Minister of Foreign Trade commented that consultation of the private sector will commence on Thursday the 13th.
