President of Costa Rica's production council quits before he takes over

Amid controversy over his appointment, José Miguel Carrillo will not now take over as executive president of Costa Rica's National Production Council, said Agriculture Minister Javier Flores.

Flores had proposed Carrillo for the post before it was revealed that Carrillo was present at a council meeting that improperly granted 10 billion colons (US$19 million) in loans.
Neither Carrillo nor a presidential spokesman would comment on the issue last night.

Costa Rican Finance Minister Resigns

Fernando Herrero, who was questioned for not updating the tax value of his properties, has resigned after being questioned about income tax payments for a company which he founded.

The minister was head of Laura Chinchilla’s government's efforts to win approval in the Legislative Assembly for a tax package called the "Solidarity Tax".
