Fridges: Guatemala Boosts Purchasing

From January to September 2019, Central American companies imported $319 million in fridges and freezers, and imports from Guatemalan companies increased 27% over the same period in 2018.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first nine months of last year, the main importer was Guatemala with $81 million, followed by Panama with $20 million, Costa Rica with $64 million, Honduras with $54 million, El Salvador with $43 million and Nicaragua with $15 million.

For the period in question, Guatemala and Panama were the markets in which purchases registered the highest year-on-year increases, rising to 27% and 22%, respectively. Costa Rica followed with 11%, El Salvador with 2% and Honduras with 1%. Nicaragua was the only market that reported a drop in imports, in this case 31%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value imported into the region increased by 10%, from $291 million to $319 million.

For the periods in question, purchases from Mexican companies grew 9%, from $90 million to $99 million.

Main sellers
In the first nine months of the year, 31% of the value imported from Central America came from Mexico, 27% from China, 16% from the USA and 8% from Colombia.

China is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 8% of the total value purchased, and by 2019 that proportion rose to 27%.

The equipment included in this analysis is domestic and industrial fridges and freezers, cabinets, chests, display cabinets and furniture for cold production, horizontal and vertical freezers of the chest or cabinet type and other machines or appliances for the production of cold. Air conditioning equipment is not covered by the figures in the report.

In the first three months of the year, Central American countries imported $92 million worth of refrigerators and freezers, and 45% was purchased by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.
