Record Nicaraguan sugar cane harvest despite rains

The harvest for the 2008-2009 cycle will be a record, surpassing 11 million 500 thousand quintals, Mario Amador, executive director of the CNPA, reported.

The representative of the sugar sector indicated that they had made an estimate to produce 12 million quintals of sugar during the period which starts around November 15 - 19, but the three weeks of continuous rain that affected the country recently cause changes in the estimate to be made.

The harvest ending in May increased by seven million quintals, amounting to some 53 million bags of sugar, a figure that represents a recovery of 10%, said Marco Augusto Garcia Noriega, president of the Sugar Association of Guatemala (Asazgua).

"The National Committee of Sugar Producers of Nicaragua has estimated that the sugar harvest, which began today and ends in May 2011, will produce 11.5 million quintals (46 kilos each), 500,000 bushels less than the same period before," according to Canal15.com.ni.

Sugar Growers Expect 48 Million Quintals Harvest

Guatemala's sugar growers expect to harvest 48.5 million quintals in the 2009/10 period.

Mario Yarzebski, spokesperson for Asazgua, the association of sugar growers of Guatemala, remarked that these projections are conservative, and that in general terms they expect similar results to 2008/09.
