Doing Business in Central American Cities

A World Bank study has evaluated regulations which exist in 22 cities in the region for starting new business, registration, construction, and border trade.

Doing Business in Central America and the Dominican Republic 2015 compares business regulations in 6 Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) and the Dominican Republic.

Banks Profiting in Central America

July 2011

In May, Panamanian banks led the earnings ranking in Central America, followed by Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, in that order.

The report of the Risk Rating Agency, Riesgo Equilibrium, affiliated to Moody's, said that the region’s banking sector - which consists of 118 banks – is showing "substantial improvement" in profits and performance with respect to the global financial and economic crisis in 2008 and 2009.

Largest Central American Banks

October 2009

The top three are Panamanian: HSBC, General and Nacional. They are followed by Banco Nacional from Costa Rica, Bladex from Panama and Agrícola from El Salvador.

Business magazine América Economía published its ranking "Latin America's largest Banks", from which we extracted the 42 Central American banks included.

Regional banking groups have gained greater importance and the magazine identified ten that represented 33% of the assets for 2008.
