Qatar Interested in Panama's Port Development

On a recent visit the Development Director of Qatar expressed his country's interest in investing in Panama.

The Director of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, Nassir Jarallah Al-Marri, explained his country is interested in developing major business projects with Panama and that they are exploring areas such as maritime and air ports, tourism, agriculture and trade. He said his visit is to prepare an agenda for the upcoming official mission.

He expressed his admiration for the growth of Panama's merchant marine and ports, noting that his country welcomed the great development that Panama has in different sectors of the economy. She indicated that a high-level official delegation will visit the country aiming to strengthen trade relations between both nations.

The Maritime Authority of Panama explained that the feasibility study is being developed by Nathan Associates, which will have to deliver the results in January 2016.

Announcements have been made citing more impetus for the development of the Caribbean Coast based around modern port infrastructure which meets international market requirements.

"In the Caribbean region there are few roads, low levels of population concentration, low levels of skilled labor and therefore the project will be carried out as a mega project to develop the Caribbean coast," said Hugo Lopez Sanchez, Deputy Director General of the Directorate General of Water Transport (DGTA by its initials in Spanish), at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI).
