In order to generate new customers and increase the cargo volume handled by the Guatemalan port of Santo Tomas de Castilla, its agents are promoting their services in neighboring El Salvador.

Installing customs offices, investing about $15 million in strengthening berths, and other measures, explain part of the success that has led representatives of the port to take business beyond the Guatemalan border.

According to an article in Elsalvador.com: "The opening of an office of the Guatemalan port in El Salvador alone has increased Salvadoran cargo handling by one percent, which until 2009 represented a fifth of all operations. Port Santo Tomas de Castilla is currently moving 5.2 million tons per year, including 272.500 containers. "
