Promising Cruise Season in Panama

The country hopes for this 2010-2011 season a $ 110 million income in foreign currency.

Estimates by the Panama Tourism Authority (PTA) took into account the arrival at Colon Port of some 185 cruise ships with approximately 320,000 passengers.

"Studies of the ATP and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, estimate that the average spending of cruise tourists is $ 90 per day. In transportation, tourists spent per day about $ 15..", according to the article in Laestrella.com.pa.

In February 88,000 Tourists to Land in Roatan

During this month a total of 37 cruise ships will dock in the ports of Roatan and Mahogany Bay, each which will be carrying between 2000 and 3000 tourists.

From the press release issued by the Honduran Tourism Institute of Honduras:

As occurred in January, February will be another busy month for tourism in Roatan, the Bay Islands with the arrival of more than 88,000 cruise ship passengers, on board 37 ships which will dock every day at the ports of Roatan and MahoganyBay, said authorities from the Secretariate and Honduran Tourism Institute.

Cruise Ship Season Begins in Nicaragua

The tourism sector expects over 70,000 visitors during the 2011/12 season.

Nicaraguan ports are preparing to receive the first cruise ship tourists since October is traditionally the month in which cruises begin.

Despite the fact that fewer ships are expected this year, since they will be larger the number of people visiting is predicted to be similar to previous years.

During the next season that starts in October 15, 180 cruise ships will anchor in the Colon 2000 terminal.

For the current nine-month season (October-10 June-11) two cruise ships will depart from this terminal: the Ocean Dream, by Spanish company Pullmantur, and the Grandeur of the Seas, by Royal Caribbean.

Tourist Spending Up in Panama

In the first six months of the year tourists spent $582.1 million, $64 million more than the same period in 2009.

In both 2009 and 2010 the most productive months were January and March.

"These figures make Panama one of the countries with most tourist spending in Central America, according to the Tourism Authority," reports Laestrella.com.pa. "An average of 13,283 visitors now pass through Tocumen Airport every 24 hours".
