Ceramic Products: Less Purchases in 2018

Last year in Central America, $357 million was imported in ceramic products, which is 8% less than what was reported in 2017.

Costa Rica, Main Buyer
In 2018, the main importer of ceramic products in Central America was Costa Rica, with $85 million, followed by Guatemala, with $78 million, Panama, with $73 million, El Salvador, with $53 million, Honduras, with $43 million and Nicaragua, with $25 million.

Regional Imports Downward
Between 2017 and 2018, the value imported into the region decreased 8%, from $386 million to $357 million.

In contrast to the general behavior of regional imports, for the years concerned Central American purchases from Brazil slightly increased, rising from $41 million to $43 million.

Largest Suppliers
Last year, 26% of the value imported into the region was from China, 14% from Mexico, 14% from Spain and 12% from Brazil.

Spain is the country of origin of Central American imports that has grown the most in the last seven years, since in 2012 it represented 7% of the total value purchased, and in 2018 that proportion rose to 14%.

Note: This analysis includes ceramic products such as tiles, glazed tiles, sinks, bathtubs, porcelain household items, porcelain bricks and slabs, ceramic tiles and others. For this report, compiled by CentralAmericaData, SIECA data were used.
