Prices rise in El Salvador

Over the past five years, the basic basket of consumer goods has risen by 42 dollars, or 67.5 percent, but just in the past year it has gone up by 28 dollars.

In May 2003, the cost of the basket was 124.56 dollars, while in 2007 it was 138.21 dollars. This May the price was 166.56.
The rate of inflation rose to 8.4 percent per year in May, up 2.4 percent from April. This kind of increase has not been seen since October 1996.

The price of the basic food basket in urban zones of El Salvador jumped by 6.27 dollars in June. In rural areas the increase was 4.08 dollars.

The increase in food prices coincided with the increase in the minimum wage.
El Salvador's national statistics-gathering body reported that residents of urban areas were paying 172.83 dollars for the main food products in June, while in the country the cost was 130.80 dollars.

DIGESTYC indicates that despite an inflation of 9.9% in August (0.03% higher than the 9.6% in July) the rising trend in price of the Basic Food Basket was detained.

The rising trend in price of the Basic Food Basket was detained this month mainly because the price of food started to stabilize due to the end of the harvest of grains and vegetables, as well as the slight drop in the price of fertilizers, said Miguel Corleto, head of the Statistics and Census Bureau (DIGESTYC).

The monthly cost of the Basic Family Food Basket (CBFA) increased in August by 1.5% in comparison to July.

According to the report from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the CBFA for August was at $263.01 while in July it was at $259.22. Still, if it is compared with January it has gone up 10%; when compared to August 2007 the increase was 16.6%.
