Pool of Companies to Buy Energy

One hundred and fifteen textile plants in Guatemala are negotiating to buy electricity directly from power generators.

Buying electricity in direct form for textile companies will allow a significant savings in production costs, thus increasing sector competitiveness with the rest of the world.

According to Prensalibre.com, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Romeo Rodríguez, said that "there are several companies that have direct contracts with generators to buy power in bulk."

One of the requirements for purchasing electricity in bulk is to "handle over 100 kilowatts (0.1 megawatts) daily,” and the deputy minister said that garment factories are classified as heavy users due to their energy consumption."

During the month of April 2009, there were $87.4 million exported to the US, Guatemala’s main trading partner, 12.7% higher than what was exported in March.

Alejandro Ceballos, president of the Committee of Textiles and Clothing (VESTEX), believes that the sector will show greater recovery in July, when the strong season will begin in the US for the sector.
