75% of plastic production is consumed in the domestic market and the rest is exported mostly to Central America.

"The majority of foreign sales are directed to the Central American market, and the rest goes to the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Mexico and some South American countries", reported Prensalibre.com .

Market Data on Plastics and Plastic Products in Central America, compiled by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData.com, shows that in 2015 the countries of the region exported 480 thousand tons of plastics and articles made of plastic, with a total value of $1056 million.

Guatemala Exports 24% More Plastic

January 2013

The Guatemalan plastics industry exported 110,485 metric tons in 2011, while in 2010 only 88,906 metric tons were sold abroad.

According to a statement from the Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT):

According to the Plastics Commission of the Guatemalan Exporters Association, trade promotion, training and education were the key initiatives that enabled the national plastics industry to increase exports from 88,906 MT to 110,485 MT in a year.

Guatemalan Plastic Exports up 14%

January 2012

After the 2009 crisis, plastic exports reported growth for a second consecutive year.

At the end of 2011 total foreign sales amounted to $241.8 million, up 14% compared to 2010 with exports of $211.2 million.

In terms of the volume of exports, the president of the Plastics Commission at Agexport , Rolando Paiz, indicated they were 8,767 metric tons, 6,122 (7%) more than in the previous year.
