Plans to Renew International Airport in El Salvador

Civil Aviation Authorities believe the public private partnership format would be the best method to use for the airport’s management.

Thursday, January 3, 2013

The Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA) will begin studies for renovation of facilities at Ilopango International Airport.

The lack of maintenance and weather conditions in the area have caused the airport to deteriorate.

According to an article by Elmundo.com.sv, near the terminal there are gullies that could damage infrastructure, although one of them and has been repaired by CEPA.

"In addition, amongst all the hangars is Migration, Customs and the flight plan control area, all gathered in a non-sterile area. This should be a restricted area where no one can enter or leave", said Eduardo Poma, president of the Civil Aviation Club.

Alberto Arene, CEPA’s president, said that for the next few days they will be making plans on how to address the problems. "The renovation work could be done through a concession or a public-private partnership", added Arene.

Moreover, the President of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Alirio Serrano, believes that a government partnership with private enterprise would result in the proper administration of the airport zone.
