Plan to Boost Tourism in Nicaragua’s South

Developed by Foundation “Centro Empresarial Pellas”, the program fosters tourism in Granada, Isla de Omotepe and San Juan del Sur.

It was started 6 months ago, and provides training for 500 micro, small and medium tourism companies.

“Our goal with the project is to contribute in generating more jobs and better incomes by improving the quality of human resources and the management skills of tourism businessmen”, explained Ian Coronel, tourism head at Centro Empresarial Pellas.

Nicaraguan business leaders in the tourism sector have proposed identifying areas in the country where political and social tensions are least fraught, with the aim of attracting tourists and minimizing the impact of the crisis.

One of the objectives pursued by the strategy proposed by entrepreneurs in the tourism sector in Nicaragua is to attract mainly surfers or backpackers who come to Costa Rica. To do so, "... they will hold business conferences in the neighboring country and request support from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT)."

Co-Invierto announced the second round of the program which will benefit some 220 tourism SMEs.

Ian Colonel, project manager, said that for this second call $ 600 000 are available, funded by the Dutch government and Grupo Pellas.

$3.5 Million for Guatemalan SMEs

Through a loan with BCIE, "Génesis Empresarial" foundation will expand its credit lines.

The foundation will use these resources in giving loans to SMEs and communal rural banks.

Édgar Ballsels, director of the Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCIE), told newspaper Prensa Libre that the entity "has decided to extend credit lines for small and medium enterprises...".

$3.6 Million for Nicaraguan Tourism SMEs

July 2009

Some 500 micro, small and medium enterprises from the tourism area will be trained on business management over the next three years.

The program is called Tourism Development in South West Nicaragua, and is funded by the Dutch government and the "Centro Empresarial Pellas" Foundation. 500 SMEs will be chosen to participate, among hotels, restaurants, food suppliers, tour operators and agricultural tourism.
