Paper and Cardboard: Imports Fall 9% up to March 2020

Between January and March 2020, paper and cardboard imports in Central America totaled $528 million, 9% less than in the same period in 2019, with Guatemala and Honduras being the markets that registered the most significant reductions.

Variation of Regional Imports
Between the first three months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the volume of paper and cardboard imports increased slightly by 1%, from 515,000 tons to 519,000 tons.

For the periods in question, the value imported registered a 9% decrease, from $583 million to $528 million.

In contrast to the general behavior, purchases from companies in Brazil grew 30%, from $12 million in 2019 to $16 million in 2020.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
From January to March 2020 the main buyer of paper and cardboard in Central America was Costa Rica with $155 million, followed by Guatemala with $131 million, Honduras with $89 million, El Salvador with $73 million, Panama with $50 million and Nicaragua with $30 million.

Five of the six countries recorded year-on-year declines in purchases. In Guatemala and Honduras imports fell 14% in both cases, while in Panama, Costa Rica and El Salvador they fell by 11%, 10% and 5%, in that order.

Nicaragua was the only market that registered a positive variation, reporting a 20% increase, respectively.

Origin of Imports
During the first quarter of the year, 35% of the value imported from Central America came from the United States, 8% from Mexico, 5% from China, 3% from Brazil and 2% from Canada.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has decreased the most for the period in question over the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 42% of total purchases, and in 2020 that proportion fell to 35%.

Paper and Cardboard: Business with Mexico Downwards

November 2020

From January to July 2020, Central American companies imported $62 million in paper and cardboard from Mexico, 28% less than in the same period in 2019, a decrease that can be explained by the drop in purchases in all markets in the region.

During the first half of the year, imports of paper and cardboard in Central America reached $1.262 million, an increase of 9% compared to the same period in 2017.
