Variation of Regional Imports.
Between the first half of 2019 and the same period of 2020, the imported volume of paper and cardboard registered a slight increase of 1%, going from 984 thousand tons to 987 thousand tons.

For the periods in question, the value of imports fell by 10%, from $1,131 million to $1,019 million.

In contrast to the general behavior, purchases from companies in China grew 5% for the periods under analysis, going from $55 million in 2019 to $58 million in 2020.

Costa Rican and Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to June 2020, the main buyer of paper and cardboard in Central America was Costa Rica with $306 million, followed by Guatemala with $256 million, Honduras with $166 million, El Salvador with $135 million, Panama with $100 million and Nicaragua with $56 million.

Five of the six countries recorded year-over-year declines in their purchases. Imports fell 14% in Honduras, 13% in El Salvador, 12% in Costa Rica, 9% in Guatemala and 6% in Panama.

Nicaragua was the only market to register a positive variation, reporting a 9% increase.

Origin of Imports
During the first half of the year, 35% of the value of imports from Central America came from the U.S., 8% from Mexico, 5% from China, 3% from Brazil, 2% from Colombia, 2% from Chile and 2% from Canada.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has decreased the most for the period in question in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 42% of total purchases, and in 2020 that proportion fell to 35%.

During the first half of the year, imports of paper and cardboard in Central America reached $1.262 million, an increase of 9% compared to the same period in 2017.
