Pandemic: Court Suspends Restrictions

After the Municipality of the head of the province of San Marcos, in Guatemala, decreed several trade restrictions to contain the advance of covid-19, the Constitutional Court decided to suspend them.

The country's highest court in constitutional matters heard the case after the Chamber of Commerce filed an action for protection against the provisions of the municipal corporation of the capital city of San Marcos, which were published on August 11 and are contained in Act 73-2020.

The Act prohibited the entry of merchants from rural communities in San Marcos and other municipalities, ordered the closure of municipal markets, community plazas, restaurants and cafeterias, and restricted the consumption of alcoholic beverages, among other restrictions.

Prensalibre.com reviews that "... the commune imposed certain dispositions to the inhabitants of the head of San Marcos to contain the advance of the coronavirus pandemic, which were outside of those established by the Executive in the current state of Calamity."

The article adds that "... According to the Municipality of San Marcos, the National Civil Police and the Municipal Traffic Police would be in charge of enforcing the agreement."

Quarantine: Total Closures Suspended

After the Guatemalan government carried out total closures of economic activity for three consecutive weekends in the context of the covid-19 outbreak, the president announced that there would be no total suspension of operations for the week of June 1-7.
