Panama's Urban Transport Passes Into State Hands

The government has announced that the Metro Bus service in the capital will be run by the State and its management will be granted in concession to private operators.

The government announced that the service which up to now has been provided by the company Mi Bus will pass into state hands, and the concessionaire will be a private company.

Government Minister, Milton Henriquez told Panamaamerica.com.pa "... We have reached an agreement with the company Mi Bus, it is going to retire, the state will assume the bus service as a public company and then hand over its management to one or more private operators who can manage everything; or part of the truncated bus system. "

He added that "... We want to incorporate in the medium term small buses which will provide a service known as feeders, which are those that take people from their homes to the bus terminal or Metro station, and on the return journey from their work place from these points to their homes. "

From a statement issued by presidency of Panama:

The State agreed in principle with the companies Fábrica Nacional de Carrocerías (Fanalca) and Felgate Enterprises, owners of 100% of the shares of Transporte Masivo de Panamá S.A. (TMPSA), concessionaire and operator of Mi Bus, the terms and conditions of a settlement and purchase agreement to acquire all of the shares of TMPSA through Metro de Panamá S.A. (MPSA).

The possibility of tendering Metro feeder routes and Metro Bus in Panama City and San Miguelito is being analyzed.

Government Minister Milton Henriquez, said that the aim of the eventual granting in concession of routes by tender is "... that transportation be a single integrated system which includes the Metro, Metro Bus and feeder routes."
