Panama to Build $450 Million "Hospital City"

On a 32 hectare site that used to be an antenna park, the hospital's 14 towers will be constructed.

The $450 million investment comprises the studies, analysis, design, construction and administration of the Hospital City project planned by Panama's social security service (CSS).

Reports from Panama's Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) reveal that the transfer of the 32 hectares needed for the project has already been authorized.

"Marlon De Sousa, CSS subdirector, announced last Wednesday 4 August that the structure to be built will have 14 towers in which sophisticated medical service will be provided to the population," writes Prensa.com.

It is estimated that construction of the new facilities will take three years, meaning that the current hospital will remain operational.

The new hospital will be built on the site of the former headquarters of the U.S. embassy, and will be joined to the old hospital, being very close together.

The new hospital will benefit 177.769 inhabitants of the villages of Chilibre, Las Cumbres, Alcaldedìaz and Ernesto Campos Cordoba.

The project involves construction of an 80-bed second-tier care hospital. The launch is scheduled for 2011 with completion estimated for 2012.

Bidding documents have been published for the new East Tower of the Calderón Guardia hospital.

Costa Rica's social security agency (CSS) has published details of a project to consult, build, equip and maintain the new wing of the hospital.

Danilo Monge, Special Projects Director for the CSS, told elfinancierocr.com that the East Tower will contain 23,000 square meters of floor space to be built in three stages and is expected to be ready by 2016.

Panama: Works Resumed on Hospital City

The Social Security Department has made a partial payment of $40 million to the contractor of the project to resume work and complete the complex, valued at $517 million.

The project which was awarded to the company Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) during the Martinelli administration is only 45% complete, and it should be completed in 2017.
