Panama is the main destination for Spanish investors

Panama is the main receptor of Spanish investments in Central America and projections indicate that this will continue to increase.

Panama has not escaped the expansion of Spanish capital. Based on figures provided by the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Panama, investments have surpassed $317 million, and are headed by Unión FENOSA, Telefónica and the BBVA.
Some 40 Spanish companies are present in Panama in various sectors, including gaming, software, tourism, construction, insurance, banking, petroleum, and energy.

Germany investments in Panama increase

"Panama is the main destination for German investments in Central America," said Ubertus Legge, economic adviser at the German Embassy in Panama.

The Embassy does not keep track of the flow of investment nor could they indicate the total amount of investment and data for all the companies that have entered the Panama market in the last few years, however they did point out that said investments have increased considerable during the last decade.

Panama: Interest in Investing in Sherman Base

Several companies have shown interest in investing in the former military base in Sherman, Colon.

The Reverted Property Unit said that in September they will discuss the first concrete investment proposal which they have received.

"According to a study by the Spanish consultancy C4T Tourism Business & Planning, Sherman could register investment of nearly $180 million.

Qatar Interested in Panama's Port Development

On a recent visit the Development Director of Qatar expressed his country's interest in investing in Panama.

The Director of Business Development of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, Nassir Jarallah Al-Marri, explained his country is interested in developing major business projects with Panama and that they are exploring areas such as maritime and air ports, tourism, agriculture and trade.

French Investment in Panama

French companies have invested over $700 million so far, and the figure could reach over $2 billion.

Hughes Goisbault, French Ambassador, remarked that France can’t miss being in a country that grows as fast as Panama, far more than its Central America neighbors.

As the article in AFP reports, “the Panamanian Economy has grown at an average 7% over the past 5 years, and will grow 5% in 2010”.
