Panama and Cuba begin FTA negotiations

On Tuesday, Panama and Cuba started the first round of negotiation for partial trade agreements between the two nations.

Vice minister of Foreign Trade, Severo Sousa said that "the idea of entering into partial agreements is based on the interest of pushing for the export of a limited number of goods in which the trading partner is interested in."
Panamanian authorities hope to finalize the list of products to be included in the offer by Friday.
The second round is set for the end of November or early December in Havana.

Panama - Cuba Trade Agreement Comes into Effect

October 2009

Pork and Sea products are some of the products that Panama will export to Cuba tariff-free.

The announcement was made by the Commerce and Industries Ministry of Panama (MICI).

Local newspaper Laestrella.com.pa lists some other products included in the agreement: "sausages, toilet paper, paper boxes, cartons, juice ,..., freezers, trucks, roof profiles and notebooks".

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has announced that it intends to initiate the negotiating process before the end of this year.

Cuba holds position 27 of the main destinations for Panamanian Exports, with at least 3 million dollars, according to the figures from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic.

Panama and Cuba have signed a Framework of Understanding for the Extension of the Partial Scope Agreement between both countries.

A press release from the Panamanian Ministry of Commerce and Industry reads:

The Minister of Commerce and Industry from Panama, Ricardo Quijano signed with the Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment in Cuba, Rodrigo Malmierca, a Framework of Understanding for the Extension of the Partial Scope Agreement between both countries.
