Panama and Colombia to strengthen commercial relations

The strengthening of commercial, political and economic relations were the main points at a meeting of the Goodwill Commission.

Colombian vice-chancellor, Camilo Reyes, highlighted the various instruments that were signed for commercial and customs information exchange, just like the electric interconnection project for which the letter of intent has already been signed and which will facilitate the development of a regulatory framework for interconnection between Panama and Colombia.

The International Finance Corporation has shown interest in both funding the bi national project and expanding the Panamanian electricity transmission network.

This was announced by Roberto Albisetti, general manager of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for Central America, who noted that energy demand in Panama and the region will double in the next few years and that interconnection projects are an important step in regional integration .

In a new meeting between representatives of the two governments, the status of the project will be discussed, having been paralyzed by uncertainty regarding its financial aspects.

The line has a planned extension of 614 kilometers, which will link the Panama II substation in Pedregal with Cerromatoso in Colombia. It includes an underwater stretch of 55 kilometers, of which 40 are in Panamanian territory.

The project would start in 2010, and should be operating in 2014, according to the last work schedule.

In its first stage, the power lines will have capacity for transporting 300 MW.
