Panama to host ports congress

Panama City will host the 12th Congress of Latin American and Caribbean ports between July 17 and 21.

Panama's Maritime Authority said the main aim of the congress was to debate how the region's ports could face the challenges of recent trends in maritime traffic.

The AAPA Harbors, Navigation And Environment Seminar is due to take place in Panama City, Panama, May 20-22nd, and will have a focus on environmental management, navigation and port sustainability.

Said the AAPA: "Since its opening 94 years ago, the Panama Canal has contributed significantly to increasing world trade.

The expansion of the Panama Canal will bring important changes to the logistics of the region, especially with respect to transshipments.

The president of the Latin American delegation of the American Asociation of Port Authorities (AAPA), Armando Duarte of Colombia, said, "The ports must evaluate and redefine their roles, adjusting competitively to the new situation."

The Latin American Ports Congress, to be held in Panama from June 17 to 21, will debate how to meet the challenge of growing world trade.

Latin American port authorities are planning major increases in infrastructure to keep them abreast of the investments being made by their counterparts in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Movement of containers grows 14.2% in Panama

Ports in Panama moved 2,935,000 containers (20') between January and August 2008

The figure represents an increase of 14.2% compared to the same period last year.

There were 1.3 million TEU's (Twenty-feet Equivalent Unit) unloaded and 1.6 million loaded according to statistics from the Panama Maritime Authority.
