With these results, there seems to be a positive outlook for the first half of the year and a much more conservative outlook for the second half of the year. It is possible that growth will not reach double digits."

Concrete Production Grows by 21%

One of the main indicators of the construction industry reveals the intense dynamic being maintained in this sector in Panama.

According to the Controller General of the Republic, an increase of 20.9% was reported in the production of concrete in the first quarter, as a result of strong performance by the construction industry.

$918 million in Approved Building Permits

In the first seven months of the year the value of approved construction projects amounted to $918 million, 45.3% more than in the same period last year.

This July alone, the total approved exceeded $151 million, representing a 140% increase compared to July 2011.

Of the total number of permits approved $705 million worth was for projects to be developed in the capital, being mostly non-residential.

However, in the last third of the year, the value of approved constructions suffered and fell 20.1% over the same period in 2007.

At the end of 2008, the value of approved constructions and repairs was $1.601 billion vs. $1.348 billion in 2007.

The value of construction, repair, and extension permits approved during the first half of the year was at $829.8 million.

Most of the investments are located in the district of Panama, with $675 million (58.5% more than the year before); this is followed by Arraijan, which, with $44 million, had the biggest increase in the country (161.3%).
