Panama: Sugar Cane Harvest Down 5%

The 2014/15 production cycle was 2.5 million tons, 5.4% less than production in the previous period.

From a report by the General Comptroller of the Republic:

The area planted with sugar cane for the 2014/15 crop year was 41.424 hectares, representing an increase of 2.9% compared with the 2013/14 crop year which was of 40.274 hectares.

It is noteworthy that the sugar cane harvest, was 2,589,530 short tons, according to what was observed, a decrease of 5.4% compared to the last year which was 2,736,138 short tons.This decrease is due to some plots performing poorly and hectares were left for seed.

Crops in Panama: Less Coffee, More Sugar

Between the 2016/17 and 2017/18 agricultural cycles, the volume of coffee harvested on Panamanian soil fell 15%, and the volume of sugar increased 9%.

According to the figures of the "Agricultural Survey of Coffee and Sugarcane of November 2018", compiled by the General Comptroller of the Republic, specify that the coffee activity for agricultural 2017/18 year had a harvest of 111,100 quintals piled, and in the case of sugarcane was 2,931,395 short tons.

Nicaragua: Sugar Production Up 18%

Total production from the 2016/17 harvest surpassed 15.6 million hundredweight, registering an increase of 18% compared to the previous harvest.

Figures from the National Committee of Sugar Producers show that the production of the San Antonio sugar mill was 7 million hundredweight, followed by Monte Rosa with 6.3 million, Benjamin Zeledon with 1.3 million and Montelimar with 1.2 million hundredweight of sugar.

Sugar Productivity in Central America

Guatemala has reported a productivity of 101.68 tons of sugarcane per hectare, followed by Honduras and El Salvador, reaching levels of 93.47 and 89.94, respectively.

During the harvest from November 2012 - June 2013, Guatemala achieved a productivity of 10.57 tonnes of sugar per hectare (TSH), higher than that achieved by producers neighbors El Salvador and Honduras which achieved TSH of 10.55 and 10,03, respectively.

Fall in Sugar Production Forecast

With the reduction in harvests in Mexico and India, sugar production could decline for the first time since 2009.

World production of sugarcane could decrease by 51% during the 2013-14 season compared to the 2012-13 period, as a result of the decline in prices caused by a fall in production in Mexico and India, according to researchers at Kingsman SA.
