Panama Stock Market Seeks South American Investment

From 23 to 27 September, a Panamanian delegation will visit South America in search of new investors who might be interested in participating in the local stock market.

The delegation led by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), the Superintendency of the Securities Market, the Superintendency of Banks and the Panama Stock Exchange, will visit Santiago de Chile, Lima, Peru and Bogota and Medellin in Colombia. Also participating are brokerage houses which are part of the Market Makers program (Creadores de Mercado).

According to the MEF the investors they will be visiting hold assets under management worth more than $462 billion. These include pension funds, insurance companies and financial institutions.

Malcolm Muñoz, director of Tesorería de Citi , a company that participates in the Market Maker program, believes it is important for new players to enter the local debt market.

Prensa.com reports: "The mission will present public debt instruments, but their aim is also to promote a comprehensive market".

Capital.com reports that "In 2000 only 20 brokerage houses operated in the country, by 2007 the number had climbed to 40 and as of August this year the figure reached 75."

Panama to Host Eleventh Investment Forum

August 2010

Organized by the Panamanian Stock Exchange, the event will be held on 19 August in the country's capital.

The forum will take place in the Hotel Sheraton's Great Hall in Panama City.

Participating organizations include the major publicly traded companies from Panama and Central America who will present their financial results and growth forecasts.
