Tariff-free project for energy efficient products being discussed in the Cabinet.

Prensa publishes in its website: "If the project that implements the elimination of tariffs for energy efficient products is approved by the Cabinet, just as it is, air conditioners "with indices of energy efficiency higher than or equal to 10.00," for example, would pay zero tariffs. The others would continue paying 10%."

Asian Textiles Tariff-Free in U.S.

A group of Democratic senators proposed a law to eliminate tariffs on textile products from 14 Asian countries.

Textile imports from those countries currently pay up to 28% when entering the United States.

Should the proposal be approved, a very likely scenario, the Central American countries would lose the trade advantage obtained with the U.S.

Panama Lowers Tariffs on Imported Products

Out of a 121 tariff lines modified, 82 were lowered, including cement, tuna, sardine and codfish.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Panama issued a decree authorizing the reductions, with the objective of guaranteeing supply of basic goods basket products.

In addition to the reduction of 82 tariff lines from the National Imports Tariff, 22 products registered increases, and 17 new lines were created.

More basic products were added to the list of good for which the import tariff is eliminated so as to try to slow down a little the rate of inflation.

The new ministerial agreement includes sardines, vegetable wax (from palm oil), prepared or dehydrated soups. It also includes toothbrushes, deodorants and flashlights.

According to Romulo Caballeros, Minister of the Economy, the price of imported goods is one of the topics that concerns the Government.

The official said besides offering products which enter the country with zero duty, they will also take up the task of checking the prices which, he reaffirmed, should stabilize or go down.
