The study by the Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA) showed the loss volume and noted that it comes from the post-harvest handling of 25 food products. These results provide the basis for the creation of the Center for Post-Harvest Agricultural Technology.

Marianela Palacios wrote for Prensa.com: "Among the activities to be conducted at the center are development and validation studies of methods and technologies such as sanitary and fungistatic treatments, controlled atmospheres, fan-drying, ripening acceleration processes with ethylene, mechanized packing lines and cold chains, among others, for the preservation of fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, said the IMA."
