Panama Extends Deadline for Importing Rice

Up until December 31st there is time to import up to 1 million hundredweight of paddy to supply the domestic market.

A modification of the decree extends the deadline until December for the import of grain, which must come only from the United States.

In future scenarios it is expected that rice imports will be similar, based on the difficulties faced by local producers as indicated by the decrease in the amount of land under cultivation.

Gabriel Arauz, producer and president of the Association of Rice Producers of Chiriqui explained to Laestrella.com.pa "... that rice production for the period 2014-2015 was 50 thousand hectares nationwide, while for the period 2015-2016 , although they are still planting, the figure could drop to almost half. "

Next week Panamanian rice producers will begin to export the first 350 thousand hundredweight (100 lbs) of the grain to Costa Rica.

The president of the Association of Rice Producers of Chiriqui (Aach) said that they are only waiting on the Costa Rican buyers to define (along with the Ministry of Commerce) what will be the terms of import, so that the initiative does not affect local producers in Costa Rica.
