Panama Doubles Free Internet Speed

From yesterday the country increased the connection speed of the National Internet Network (RNI in Spanish) to one megabyte.

The director of the government's innovation authority (AIG in Spanish), Pablo Ruidíaz, stated that the increase in connection speed does not add any costs to the original project.

Pa-digital.com.pa reports comments from the director: "All users of the network at any of the 661 access points located in Panama's 22 cities will benefit".

The number of users has tripled over the past 5 years, from 422.000 in 2005 to 1.4 million in 2010.

As the number of customers rise, access speeds have increased and prices have dropped. A 4MB service is currently available for less than $ 20 a month and in certain locations at the capital, connections between 15 and 25 MB for residential use are offered.

Costa Rica: Amnet to Offer its Own Internet Service

Starting this week the company will offer its own Internet connection service, after years of carrying Racsa’s service through its cable network.

Both companies, Amnet and Radiografica Costarricense S.A. (Racsa), landed an agreement under which each customer will decide with which company they want to stay.
