Panama: Basic Food Basket increased

The monthly cost of the Basic Family Food Basket (CBFA) increased in August by 1.5% in comparison to July.

According to the report from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the CBFA for August was at $263.01 while in July it was at $259.22. Still, if it is compared with January it has gone up 10%; when compared to August 2007 the increase was 16.6%.

Prices rise in El Salvador

Over the past five years, the basic basket of consumer goods has risen by 42 dollars, or 67.5 percent, but just in the past year it has gone up by 28 dollars.

In May 2003, the cost of the basket was 124.56 dollars, while in 2007 it was 138.21 dollars. This May the price was 166.56.

El Salvador's basic food basket cost jumps in June

The price of the basic food basket in urban zones of El Salvador jumped by 6.27 dollars in June. In rural areas the increase was 4.08 dollars.

The increase in food prices coincided with the increase in the minimum wage.
El Salvador's national statistics-gathering body reported that residents of urban areas were paying 172.83 dollars for the main food products in June, while in the country the cost was 130.80 dollars.

El Salvador and Honduras have the highest prices for the basic food basket in Central America

At least six products in the basic food basket have the highest prices in Central America.

This was revealed by a study presented today by the Consumer Protection agency.

According to a survey of prices carried out in Central America, the agency detected that basic goods such as milk, chicken, beans, flour, white rice, sugar, etc.
