According to the report from the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, the CBFA for August was at $263.01 while in July it was at $259.22. Still, if it is compared with January it has gone up 10%; when compared to August 2007 the increase was 16.6%.
Over the past five years, the basic basket of consumer goods has risen by 42 dollars, or 67.5 percent, but just in the past year it has gone up by 28 dollars.
The price of the basic food basket in urban zones of El Salvador jumped by 6.27 dollars in June. In rural areas the increase was 4.08 dollars.
At least six products in the basic food basket have the highest prices in Central America.
The Ministry of Economy in Panama recognizes that the drop achieved in the cost of basic goods is not what was expected, and companies are insisting on its removal.
