Panama: Airports Expansion Under Consideration

The air transport authority analyzes the expansion of airports 'Enrique Maleck' and 'Enrique Jiménez'.

"Enrique Maleck" airport is located in the province of Chiriquí, whereas "Enrique Jiménez" is in the city of Colón.

From Panamá América's website: "Construction of another terminal in the central region was approved, this could be in Río Hato ... the air transport authority is seeking authorization to request an additional credit line over $4 million..."

A statement by the Presidency of Panama reads:

January 2013

President Ricardo Martinelli inaugurated the expansion of the terminal and runway at the Enrique Maleck airport, with an investment of over $27 million which has transformed the airfield into an international airport.

The president explained that this work will result in an increase in tourism and exports and other linked business activities will also grow.

Offers Received for Enrique Jimenez Airport Construction

Six companies have submitted bids constructing the new airport in the province of Colón, northern Panama.

The lowest economic offer was presented by Grupo San José with $52.97 million, while the highest was from FCC Construction with $99.49 million.

Panama's Civil Aviation Authority (AAC in Spanish) indicated that the next step is for an evaluation committee to review the information provided before choosing which company meets the appropriate criteria to be awarded the project, according to Panamá América's web portal.

Companies Bid for Malek Airport in Panama

Between 10 and 12 companies are expected to submit their bids todays for designing and building the expansion of Airport Enrique Malek.

The estimated cost of the project is $30 million.

“The cost of the project was initially put at $24.1 million, but was revised to $30 million, after technical studies were conducted”, reported Panamá América.

In two weeks, the expansion project—which entails 420 additional meters of runway at the international airport—will be ready.

With an investment of $300,000, the runway expansion will allow for three new airplanes.

The regional director of the Authority of Civil Aeronautics (AAC), Inés de Esquivel, informed La Estrella: “ the last five years, $1.5 million dollars in investments have been made for the improvement of various areas at the Enrique Malek airport."
