Panama and Costa Rica Establish Measures to Streamline Customs

The two countries have taken measures to facilitate trade by streamlining customs and phytosanitary procedures required for trade in goods between them.

A press release from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Panama states that the Minister of Commerce and Industry of Panama, Ricardo Quijano will travel to Costa Rica on the first of December to meet with Minister of Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez.
The statement says that the purpose of the meeting is to “evaluate results obtained through coordination and joint work set out in the Programme for Implementation of trade facilitation on border issues and strengthening the dialogue on trade, signed last August 12 by the Ministers responsible for foreign trade, who have been coordinating with customs, immigration, health and transport authorities in both countries.

Also, the occasion will be apt for an extraordinary meeting of the Administrative Commission on the trade agreement with this country, to sign the Phytosanitary and Health Guidelines for Trade Facilitation, with the aim of improving the implementation of control measures on health and phytosanitary inspections.

The minister explained that what is needed is to improve the flow of commercial land traffic and for that purpose, they are taking steps that will help in bilateral dynamic, while safeguarding health and phytosanitary interests.

Ten companies producing chickens, eggs and dairy products have received authorizations valid for three years to export to Honduras.

This morning the Minister of Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez and her counterparts from Panama, Ricardo Quijano, Norway, Trond Giske, Switzerland, Johann Schneider, Iceland, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and Liechtenstein, Aurelia Frick signed a Free Trade Agreement negotiated with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), with which it consolidates its business relationship with the European continent.

Chaos at Customs Border Post

The Costa Rican customs office at Penas Blancas, on the border with Nicaragua, is going through social and commercial chaos pending reforms in infrastructure and procedures.

Delays in the passage of trucks carrying goods are causing major losses to exporters, although business chambers have not conducted any specific studies, said Mario Montero, executive vice president of the Costa Rican Chamber of the Food Industry (Cacia).

Costa Rica and Canada to Update FTA
