Panama: Works Waters in Herrera

As part of the Drought Plan, $2.5 million has been allocated for the purchase of feed for cattle, drilling wells and building water reservoirs in the province of Herrera.

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that it will be hiring companies in the province to carry out the drilling of wells and building reservoirs as part of a plan to mitigate the effects of drought in the area.

Prensa.com reports that in addition "... agricultural aqueducts will be created which will benefit approximately 20 producers, says the Minister of Agricultural Development (MIDA), Jorge Arango."

"... To ensure the effectiveness of this program, the head of the MIDA explained that they will be hiring companies from the province - who know the area- , who in addition must have their own operators who provide well drilling services."

Two months after the end of the rainy season, farmers in Costa Rica lament that the government has yet to execute the works needed to mitigate the effects of the droughts scheduled for next summer.

Panama Expects 7 Months of Drought

The climate phenomena known as "El Niño" would extend the drought period from November to May 2010.

This was explained by Victor Pérez, head of the Agricultural Development Ministry, who also called on farmers and breeders to prepare for tough times.

"Pérez made these declarations while explaining to Congress his Ministry's $90 million budget for 2010", reports local newspaper La Estrella.
