Panama: Drop in Arrivals of Cruise Ships

In the first four months of the year the number of passengers on board cruise ships that passed through Panamanian ports was 88 000, 70% less than in the same period in 2014.

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

Data from the first quarter of the year differs greatly from that of the same period last year, when the Tourism Authority of Panama recorded the arrival of 299,000 cruise passengers.

Juan De Dios Stanziola, head of the Department of Statistics at the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), told Laestrella.com.pa that "... the decline in the number of passengers is due to the fact that a lot of cruises decided to divert their destinations, resulting in a reduced market for the cruise industry in Panama. For example, in December 2013 one of the largest cruise lines, Royal Caribbean, retired from the Panamanian market. "

Contrary to what is stated by the statistics of the AMP and ATP, Augusto Terracina, CEO of the Puerto Colón 2000, said that cruise activity continues to grow and with good prospects for future seasons. The figures from the Puerto Colón 2000 are different to that shown by AMP and ATP. According to the company, from January to April 2015, total passenger traffic reached 155.965.
