Bread and Cookies: Business with Peru Grows at 4%

In the first nine months of 2020, Central American countries allocated $327 million to import bakery, pastry and biscuit products, and purchases from companies in Peru grew 4% compared to the same period in 2019.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2020 the main importer of bakery products in Central America was Guatemala, with $87 million, followed by Panama, with $55 million, El Salvador, with $54 million, Costa Rica, with $49 million, Nicaragua, with $43 million and Honduras, with $39 million.

For the period in question, Salvadoran and Nicaraguan purchases were the only ones that increased year-on-year, since the variations amounted to 17% and 0.3%, respectively.

Guatemalan imports decreased 6%, Panamanian imports decreased 9%, Costa Rican imports decreased 14% and Honduran imports decreased 27%.

Purchase Prices
From January 2012 to September 2020, the average price per kilo of imported bakery products in the countries of the region has remained stable, ranging between $1.80 and $2.25.

U.S. and Mexico, Main Sellers
During the first nine months of 2020, 13% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., 7% from Mexico, 4% from Peru and 3% from Colombia.

Peru is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in recent years, since in 2012 it represented 0.6% of the value purchased, and in 2020 the proportion rose to 4%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2019 and the same period in 2020, the imported volume of bakery, pastry and biscuit products reported a 6% drop, and in the case of imported value it registered a 7% drop, going from $352 million to $327 million.

In the case of purchases from Peru, for the period in question, they went from $12.5 million to $13 million.
