Landfill Concession Cancelled in Panama

The Urban Cleaning Authority (AAUD) has ordered the cancelation of the concession that had been granted to the Colombian company Gelmas, for garbage collection and disposal in Anton.

Friday, July 29, 2011

The concession was awarded last week by the City Council of Anton to Gelmas, who promised to build a new landfill in the El Jobo area.

The director of the AAUD Henry Ho said he had previously warned that any such concession would be illegal, since waste collection and disposal services are under the jurisdiction of the AAUD.

Ho asked the controller general, Gioconda de Bianchini, not to endorse the contract if it reaches his office.

The project's other opponents include the residents of El Jobo and the representative of Anton, Juan Diaz, who told Pa-digital.com.pa that they needed to ‘review the contract thoroughly’ in order to know more about the company benefiting from it and verify if the contract is legal. "
