From a statement issued by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute:

Hermes Navarro, Chief of Attraction of Airlines at the ICT, indicated that negotiations with this airline began last March 29, 2016, in Santiago, Chile, where they made firm the operation from Lima to San José, which has a natural connection with the destinations of Santiago de Chile (SCL), Buenos Aires, Argentina (BUE) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (SAO). Also, and depending on certain operational restrictions, it could efficiently connect with Montevideo, Uruguay (MVD), Asunción, Paraguay (ASU), Córdoba (COR), Rosario (ROS) and Mendoza (MDZ) in Argentina. 

Mauricio Ventura, Minister of Tourism, commented that 'With LATAM's decision to fly directly and for the first time to the country, we have opened our horizon and we have managed to penetrate South America, a market with great potential for Costa Rica, for which we have implemented the aforementioned actions. For the first time we have carried out studies for better prospects in five Latin American markets (four of them in South America: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru) and today we we are materializing these efforts with the arrival of this important airline, one of the strongest in the hemisphere  both in terms of tourism and cargo'."

New Flight between Panama and Lima

February 2020

The low-cost airline Wingo announced that as of April 28 it will begin operating a direct flight twice a week between the capitals of Panama and Peru.

The new route, which will have tickets available on Tuesdays and Saturdays, will be operated by 737-800 NG aircraft with capacity for 186 passengers, company officials said.

Copa Airlines has announced new flight from Panama City to Rosario from 1 July 2016 with four weekly frequencies.

Costa Rica Seeks to Recover Air Connectivity

The government is negotiating with Peruvian Airlines direct flights between the capital of Peru and San Jose International Airport.

Nacion.com reports that "On 17 May, Avianca announced changes to its services in Costa Rica, a measure that eliminated direct flights to Quito and Guayaquil, in South America, and also to Havana, the Cuban capital.
