Azucena Castillo, general manager of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua (APEN), said the purchase contracts are for okra, watermelon, ginger and dragon fruit.

"He stressed that those 4.2 million are in addition to what is planned to be exported this year (about 2.200 million dollars) and it also opens new markets," reported Laprensa.com.ni.

Nicaragua: Exports to Europe Recover

In the first half of the year exports to European countries totaled $223 million, 46% more than in the same period in 2016.

The United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Italy and France were the main destinations of goods that Nicaragua exported between January and June of this year.  Gold coffee, shrimp, mangoes, cakes, okra, rum, cacao, sugar cane and leather footwear are the main export products.

The non-traditional agro-export sector of Panama predicts the worst production in 25 years, with a 40% fall in the cultivated area and 50% in volume.

According to the Union of Nontraditional Agro-exporters (Gantrap) in the 2010/11 season, 2,600 hectares of melon, watermelon and pumpkin will be cultivated; 1,500 less than last season.
