Nicaragua to Promote Sustainable Tourism

The agreement of cooperation signed by Rainforest Alliance will permit small and medium businesses to be qualified in "good management practices in sustainable tourism."

Friday, February 13, 2009 publishes: "´Among the actions derived by the agreement are the creation of new routes and tourist products, such as lodging services at agribusiness farms or certified forests, hotel sales, and arts and crafts made from wood certified in correspondence with forest conservation policies,´ indicates the report."

Sustainable tourism debated

Costa Rica is host to a meeting of the International Working Group on Sustainable Tourism, which will mull environmentally friendly initiatives that could be adopted in tourism policies.

The 19-nation group is meeting outside of France for the first time. The task force was established as a follow-up to agreements at the World Conference on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002.

At the International Tourism Fair of Madrid 2012 (FITUR), the region is jointly aiming to give impetus to sustainable tourism.

The Costa Rican Tourism Minister, Alan Flores Moya said one of the objectives is to present the region as multi cultural and nature filled.

"Aside from presenting the national plans of each Central American country, Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras and Belize will be in the Spanish capital targeting the European market as one of their preferred customers, as several ministers told Efe Tourism in the region.

Central American Tourism Will be Promoted in Europe

The isthmus will improve its presence in the European market through an agreement between Rainforest Alliance and the Central American Tourism Promotion Agency.

Such agreement will make it easier for sustainable tourism companies to market themselves in Europe, said Cristina Surh, marketing director of Rainforest Alliance.
